Prof. Hasenfuss received his training in medicine at University of Freiburg from 1982 to 1988. From 1888 to 1990 he was Visiting Assistant Professor at Department Molecular Physiology and Biophysics, University of Burlington, Vermont, USA. 1993 to 1998 he was an Assistant Professor in Internal Medicine and Cardiology, University of Freiburg. Since 1998 he is Chair of the Department of Cardiology and Pneumology, Georg-August-University Göttingen and since 2000 he is Chair of the Heart Center Göttingen. Since 2010 he is Chair of the Heart Research Center Göttingen. He is also Chief of Clinics and Rehabilitation Center Lippoldsberg since 2005.

Prof. Hasenfuss is interventional cardiologist. Besides interventional catheter procedures his specialisation is heart failure treatment including use of devices in heart failure. The department also has great experience in electrophysiology procedures including ablation of atrial fibrillation. Also the department is one of the leading centers in interventional aortic valve implantation and interventional mitral valve repair through catheter procedures.

The Department of Cardiology and Pneumology in the Heart Center Göttingen is the largest department of the University Medicine Göttingen. The department has 90 beds on wards including Intensive Care Unit, Coronary Care Unit, Chest Pain Unit. The Department of Cardiology and Pneumology offers a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. This includes cardiac catheterization and treatment of coronary artery disease and myocardial infarction. The cath lab is operated over 24 hours per day during 365 days of the year. The cath lab has a high expertise in transcutaneous aortic valve implantation procedures (so far 150 cases). This is done in close cooperation with the Department of Thoracic Cardiac and Vascular Surgery. The department is among the leading departments in the area of catheter-based repair of mitral valve regurgitation by mitra clips. The electrophysiology lab offers all types of ablation procedures including ablation of atrial fibrillation and of ventricular tachycardias. It also offers pacemaker implantation and implantation of defibrillators and cardiac resynchronisation devices. Together with Thoracic Cardiac and Valvular Surgery, all types of heart vascular and thoracic surgery procedures are available. The Department of Cardiology, together with the Department of Radiology runs the section Cardiac Imaging. Here, cardiac magnetic resonance tomography and computer tomography are offered at a high level of expertise. Particular focus of the department is heart failure diagnostics and therapy including diastolic heart failure and systolic heart failure including device therapy and implantation of assist devices.
